I was in it for the food and the commercials and I honestly couldn’t tell you how many baskets Seattle made.

Do you think it’s a common thing for petrolheads to be non-sportsers? I honestly could not be less interested in mainstream sports. Which is annoying because most people live and die via sports.
Part of my morning routine is breezing the sports headlines so I don’t get caught being myself at the water cooler.

I’m a pretty casual sports-watcher, and similarly, most of my reasoning is related to social interactions. I used to watch Sports Center in high school only because a lot of my friends did, and I wanted to be able to participate in more than 10% of the conversation.

I find it difficult to not pay any attention at all, but I have some deep resentments toward professional sports. Still, I understand the games reasonably well and use sports metaphors all the time in my teaching.

I didn’ t even know it was yesterday until I saw that FP article about the car commercials. Didn't click the article though - I don’t care much for car commercials.

I’m pretty good at it at this point. I just get a quick overview of sports from google. Then I look/listen for a repeatable “line” that I can call up if needed .
For example. I’m located outside of Philadelphia. I made sure that I knew who won the super bowl this morning before I left. As I walked into the kitchen to get my coffee I heard two guys talking about it as they were parting ways.
Guy: “Really nice to see Andy Reid get one even if it wasn’t with the Eagles.”
Boom, that line is good all week! Bonus, I knew that Andy Reid was the former coach of the Eagles because I have been googling headlines for the entirety of my professional career.
Alternatively , I will be the first hand up to play a pickup game of xyz sport.

I have to halfway pay attention to college football all season, so once that game is done I can stop faking my way through almost every conversation with other guys and let my brain go on vacation for 8 months or so.
Nobody in most of the South cares much about the NFL, to be honest. Even in the cities with NFL teams, college football is almost always a much bigger draw. Except maybe in Nashville because Vanderbilt sucks :)

Same. I keep up with my local NFL team and thats it. Car racing too. As much as I love cars and racing games I cant watch racing for any longer than a minute then im bored.

I don’t think it’s common for most petrolheads to be non-sportsters, but the type of petrolhead that frequents oppo probably is. Basically, the nerdy ones that don’t like sports won’t like sports.

I used to listen to a rock station, that became a “sports hub” but kept the 2 funny morning guys. On my hour trip, i would soak up quite a bit, so I could get through the day.
My coworkers were super sports nuts the beginning of every meeting was 15minutes of football.
Then I moved, stopped caring, and sport conversations went from “ok I can deal with this” , to wanting to slit my wrists.
